IMPORTANT THOUGHTS FROM

Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School

Things People Appreciate

Culture

All students are accepting of everyone's culture and they love learning about each other's traditions. Since we promote such a strong cultural awareness at our school, many students that may not have the ability to gain experiences during their life are able to through assemblies.

I'm very please that King is accepting international students

and have ESL Classes

Appreciate

I appreciate the open communication with teachers, principal, and parents. I also enjoy the positive and inclusive environment offered to the children.

Respect, organization

I'm very happy with the progress of my children at the King's school and the way they are treated. They have been treated with respect and have learned to respect the teachers and staff. The school is very organized and we've frequently been invited to take part in many activities and share.

Most of the staff works hard to be excellent teachers and support

We have some great old and new teachers, secretaries, principal, support staff who are working hard to support our students.

Some Concerns

Discipline

Classrooms are overwhelmed at a couple of levels with discipline problems. We struggle with lack of family support or ways to handle behavior. Behavior inhibits learning for our students and too much time is spent just managing so that much of our curriculum becomes a rush.

We need all parents/guardians to be involved in their children's education

Many parents/guardians are full supporters of the students and staff. We are always trying to reach other parents to come and partner with us to best teach their children. This can look different for each family…just come!

The lack of resources for the classroom/school

While technology has been purchased, there are daily resources that need replacing that are not worked within the budget (desk replacements, furniture, lockers, outdated core curriculum, books).

We have excellent teachers who work hard: their expertise should be honored

We are given directives from administrators who may not fully understand our population. I realize that these directives are given for good reasons. What I would like to see is respect for what we know about our students as to how to implement these directives.

PE

It would be nice to have PE teachers and for Fine Arts to have longer class periods. Teachers are more concerned about their prep time and Fine Arts is valued by some only as a prep for the classroom.

Things you Want your Child to Experience

More time to be able to use the Smart board and work with technology

We will be required to test the children using technology so they need to be familiar with it.

Math materials

I will be excited to see what new math materials are picked for elementary buildings to use. We have not had new materials for many years and I worry we may be behind.

More collaborations

I would like to see more teachers collaborating with fine arts and communicating about how to help students.

More service and volunteer

Kids need to be given more opportunities to do things for other people. Whether it is internal and in our building, for another building or for our community.

Field trips

I think some field trips would really help the children and engage them. For example, the Pollinatarium (U of I) is a wonderful place to learn about pollinators such as beens and bumble bees.
